Common questions
Atlas says none of my photos have a location
Location has to be switched on for the camera at the time a photo is taken. Open the iOS Settings app, go to Privacy and Security, then Location Services, then Camera, and choose “While Using the App”. This only affects photos taken from then on. Older photos without a location cannot be placed, because the information was never saved.
A city has the wrong name
Place names come from Apple’s map data. Atlas tidies them up, promoting a ward or borough to the city it belongs to and merging suburbs into the nearest large centre, but it can still get an edge case wrong. If a place is named oddly, email us the name it shows and the name you expected.
Somewhere is missing
Open Settings inside Atlas and choose “Scan for new photos”. If the place still does not appear, the photos from it probably have no location saved. If the name looks wrong rather than missing, try “Rebuild location cache”, which looks every place up again.
Atlas can only see some of my photos
That happens when limited access was granted rather than full access. Open Settings inside Atlas: “Choose photos” lets you add more to the selection, and “Grant full photo access” opens iOS Settings so you can switch to the whole library.
The first scan is slow
Reading the library is quick, but naming places is rate limited by Apple’s map service, so a library covering a lot of the world takes a few minutes the first time. Results are cached, so later scans only look up places that are genuinely new. You can keep using the app while it finishes.
I changed a cover photo and want it back
Open the photo you want as the cover from inside a place and use the cover control to set or clear it. Clearing it returns the place to choosing its own.
Will my stamps survive a new phone?
Yes, as long as you are signed in to the same iCloud account. Earned stamps are saved to your own iCloud, so they carry across, and they are not lost if you later delete the photos that earned them.
Does Atlas work without a connection?
Mostly. Everything already scanned works offline. Naming a place you have never been before needs a connection, and Atlas falls back to a built-in list of major cities when there is not one.

If something crashes or looks wrong, a screenshot helps more than anything. Send it to [email protected] with a note about what you were doing at the time.
Requirements
iPhone running iOS 18 or later. Works best with photos that have Location Services switched on for the camera, which is the default.
